Taking Care of Yourself As a Stay at Home Mom

Moms, it is so important to take care of yourself if you are a stay at home mom (SAHM). Of course, any mother should take care of herself regardless whether she works outside of the home or not. However, many moms who primarily stay at home do not nurture themselves properly. For those of you who stay at home and have worked outside of the home, you are quite aware that it is an entirely different ballgame to primarily be at home with your children all day.

It is very important for moms to take care of themselves not just everyone else. Many moms forget to do that because they are so busy taking care of everyone else's needs during the day that by the time it is time to take care of themselves they are too tired. There are several simple things a SAHM can do to help her spirits during the week. If you try these little things, you might see a difference in your well being!

  • Go outside several times a week. Sun can be good for your mind, body, and health.
  • Try to sleep when the baby sleeps. Easier said than done of course!
  • Try to find someone to babysit your kids once a week so you have some "me time".
  • Try to keep your day organized so you can feel productive at the end of the day.
  • Don't do chores all day long because that will burn you out.
  • Try to keep an organized chore schedule so you don't feed behind.
  • Make sure you and your husband have date nights.
  • Take the kids out for regular outings so you don't feel like you are at home too much.
  • Make an effort to call a friend weekly to talk to. Don't substitute social networks as real life socializing.
  • Plan girls night outs with your friends.
  • Plan weekly play dates so you can bond with other women who are in a similar boat as you.

These simple tips can make a world of a difference while staying at home. A lot of stay at home moms get in the habit of isolating themselves from the outside world. Make an effort to get adult interaction instead of listening to the kids scream and play all day. Being a stay at home mom can be a fun and worthwhile for your family if you make sure to nurture yourself as well.
